However, if your battery cannot deliver 12 volts while cranking, then it cannot initialize the computers or turn on the fuel injectors, or run the electric power steering.Ever since the Rav4 randomly wont start. Today it would crank, start to run then shut off and in the past couple weeks would just occasionally not start. Toyota Mechanic: Jonathon. The solenoid is part of the starter on your Rav4. It's a pretty basic ECM controlled starting system. I recommend trying a new battery in it. When the radio and lights work but it won't start, try jiggling the shifter in Park, or shifting to Neutral and see if it starts. I don't think disconnecting the battery had anything to do with it.

It had been leaking oil bad, I did the oil pump housing gasket, o-ring, crank seal, timing belt and tensioners, water pump, and spark plugs. It was running fine except for a minor vacuum leak thats not an issue once it warms up. It would stall if I let it idle.
