Joe N. Most of the boats you mentioned (jones, eastern, maritime, parker SE) are low deadrise boats (12 - 14 degrees). These boats will drift well but will pound you in any kind of a chop. Yes they are oily so you should fillet them (you can leave the skin on) a little salt and pepper and roll them in yellow corn meal, fry in Crisco to golden brown and drain on a paper towel. It is my moms favorite fish to eat.Once i got the actual keel guard off, there was alot of leftover glue/adhesive on the hull. I soaked the whole thing with acetone and gently scraped with a plastic scraper. Once i got the bulk off i soaked a rag with acetone and rubbed most of the rest off. Most guys used 30 lb mono in spring / summer - then put on 30lb Monel for late fall / winter. It's a good reel for spring - I'd stick with lighter lures - up to say 10 ozs. Not sure it will handle big umbrellas.

If that's still the case then aluminum butts are the way to go, period. For $20-40 less a rod you can go with slick butts. You will gain some stability with the aluminum butts and certainly longevity. However, if you're a rec fisherman slick butts would be fine.

Acetone won't harm your gelcoat but it may dull the finish slightly. there may be other compounds/soaps that will do the job easier or better. For the price that you paid for the cover, I would ask the manufacturer of the cover what will remove the color from your boat's finish.
