At later stages, if you live long enough to get your metalworking skill up, you can use metal bars or metal sheets to barricade the window instead of planks and the bars don't block vision so curtains/sheets are essential but you have the advantage of being able to open them to look out and check the area before you go outside.
If you want a safe barricade, just build fences, then put any junk behind them. Furniture, build crates, etc. You have to use a specific kind of car barricade with the cars in front of, and right up against player built walls. You can add up to 2 planks and still be able to see out the window/door. Both the Metal Sheet and Metal Bar barricades provide the most protection (up to 10,000HP). However Metal Bars allow you to see out the window.
Same here, I just figured out that Realistic Weapon Durabilities was causing the issue. Disabled it on the load screen, started the file, option now shows up (and works) just fine. To save you the trouble in case you've also got these, I'm also using Weapon Condition Indicator and Wedge's Item Name Fixes and they weren't involved in the problem.

My logic being that if zombies are attracted to player creations, then I should obscure the view of the barricade from the outside with a sheet.
