I recently had the same issue in my 2016 3.6. Not the trailer part though. I took it to the dealer. They were able to pull some type of code. End result, the sensors in the back needed to be replaced. It hasn't happened since. 2016 Outback 3.6R + Eyesight + Nav + Moon Roof. I'm lucky, my tech said not too long ago, he had a brand new subaru with 200 miles on it, with all the same issues that mine had with $18,000 worth of damage from rodents!!!
