For STOPPING you want bullet diameter over velocity. I'd take a 200gr JHP on a black bear in 10mm. I have actually been in a fight with a black bear, and have hunted them extensively using a .357. After my fight, I got rid of the .357 and bought a .44. Hard cast aren't the best idea on a black bear, they're just not that big.
