They have less stopping power than the knife and machete, but penetrate armor, and armored zombies are somewhat common. Armor pen + bleed can be a good time. Knife, machete, spear = edged. Fists, clubs, sledge, batons = blunt. There are way more on-hit mods so you can make an electro-stun fist or knife, or add fire or freeze effects to a baton.
