I snapped a photo and labeled the wires according to what was labeled on each wire. There was a 3 pair line and 2 additional wires of different colors that were labeled to match the thermostat. They are as follows: 3 pair wire with shielding stripped back: BLUE = G WHITE = Y RED = RC 2 additional lines: WHITE = W BLACK = R
This was not recommended by ecobee support and did solve the problem as I could then run the setup as a 2-wire installation. Other info I found out: the ecobee3 has about 3.5W power consumption. Each contact can handle up to 2 amps. I also originalloly had the low voltage issue that Hfly1 talks about.A wire connected to the Y3 terminal on your current thermostat indicates that you have a three-stage cooling system. ecobee thermostats do not support three stages of cooling.
