I only ask this because I find that most of the maps that bo4 remake are, layout wise, superior to the originals they are remaking. Or should I stay faithful to bo4. Curious what you guys think!

When you launch, play non-custom maps to level up, or unload the mods (custom maps load a mod). When mods are active, you don't gain any xp.
