Edit: Another reason why, is that it's just "easier" to aquire casting gear than it is melee as a Wizard. Hence, if you're new to playing one, gearing for spell casting provides for a quicker return on investment. Alternative idea: Take 2 levels of Artificer and 18 Wizard.
