This is the first time I've changed out the gear oil in a scout and I was only able to get 1 quart in before the oil started leaking back out. The transmission however takes a GL4 rated gear oil or synchromesh fluid. A gl5 rated oil has too much sulfur in it which affects the synchromesh parts. I just changed my gear oil in the front and the fluid capacities I've seen posted says 4 pints (2 quarts), but that much won't fit in. At about a 1.3 qts it starts flowing out the fill hole.

I have always liked Mobil synthetic products. However, for our 1999 Jeep XJ Cherokee Dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25" axles with ARB Lockers, I use Mopar 75W-120 synthetic gear lube. I use this same lube in the 9.25" and 11.5" AAM axles in the 2005 Ram 3500 4WD truck.

I am getting a light roar or waa waa waa waa only on light acceleration going down the highway that stops when you let off the gas. Dealer said not worth tearing it out at this point.
