After 1970, silver half dollars were made up of the copper-nickel formula. As with quarters, an exception was made in 1976, the year of the US Bicentennial. For that year, uncirculated mint sets of half dollars were made of 40% silver and had the “S” imprint on them. They were also made available to collectors and dealers at a special cost.
