If I was in brown bear country I'd want a 10mm, but if I had to use .357 SIG or .40 S&W it would be a tossup. .357 SIG is generally going to have more energy, but a heavier .40 caliber bullet would be at least slightly more effective at penetrating the skull (especially with cast bullets).
